Friends of Lulu is a national nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote and encourage female readership and participation in the comic book industry.
Their goal is to change the stereotype that comics are just for kids or
are mainly about spandex-clad hunks and babes in never-ending fight scenes. The Friends of Lulu
Recommended Reading List contains hundreds of titles running the gamut from Japanese manga to cutting-edge graphic literature to standard favorites like Archie, Star Wars, and Wonder Woman. You will also find lots of books by women on this list. Female cartoonists are producing some of the most exciting work being done in comics today -- see their list of Women Doing Comics for an overview of women creators in the comics industry.
Also check out Sequential Tart, the Eagle Award-winning monthly web-zine about the comics industry, featuring exclusive interviews and columns by a virtually all-female staff.
